Kellogg 1Y vs 2Y MBA

by vik004 » Sat Jul 26, 2014 11:42 am
I am not sure if I should apply to 1Y or 2Y program at Kellogg. I am a 30 year old male working in Finance industry in US and would like to move to consulting. Would 1Y be a problem as I would not have an internship? Should I stick to the safer option 2Y? Is 1Y easier to get into compared to 2Y? 1Y program has a lower opportunity cost but some risks too. Any inputs from this forum would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Well the advantages of the 1year program are as you mentioned, opportunity costs. And it's for a bit older candidates. The two year has the advantage of time, and patience, and is better for changing industries.

And you gotta think what's best for you are your goals.

The 2Y program is a safer bet to make the transition to Consulting at kellogg particularly since the recruiting process for 1Ys happens so early in the year it can be really tough to be prepared if this is your first foray into consulting recruiting and the case interview process. The 1Y program often targets non-career switchers and have a very heavy international lean to its class as well. One benefit of the IY program is that there are tons of sponsored MBAs from the top consulting companies in the world who would be your classmates. So it can be a great networking opportunity.

I would also say the 1Y program is not easier to get into and is actually pretty competitive as it is a pretty high caliber of applicants (hence the high proximity of sponsored consultants) but always really consider what you are looking for in your MBA experience and make the best decision for you

If you're interested in consulting, then you should really look at a 2 year program. That internship is critical. Most positions are filled with interns and only a few slots stay open for 2nd years!
