a) close connection between genes and birth defects has become
b) closeness of the connection between genes and birth defects has become
c) close connection genes have with birth defects has been becoming
d) close connection between genes and birth defects has been becoming
e) close connection between genes and birth defects becomes
Could some one explain the correct answer. I will put in the OA later.

Yes the OA is E. However need an explanation as to why 'has become' is incorrect.
The expalantion given says that both the actions are going on in the present and hence no need to swith to the past. Hence E.
However,I beleive that , 'has become' is present perfect tense which is used to denote that things started in the past and continue up to and into the present time. So whats wrong with A. |

IMO,
Here As is use as a conjunction to join two clauses..
As the two clauses should be of the same time frame ,same tense needs to be used.
As genetics researchers acheive greater success in their attempt to map..
Thus we need to use present tense only..
Hence E!!
