Kaplan CAT 1 - 670 - With IR - Q(88%),IR(50%),V(66%) Post Mon Apr 02, 2012 2:43 am

Whiskers !
That was a dead drop on the face. This is the new Kaplan test with Integrated Reasoning guys.

Few things about the test i thought should be observed :
Kaplan is providing new GMAT CAT format with IR included, and i took it.
The IR interface is not user friendly and not functional. It is a graphically stimulative interface similar, at best, to the original GMAT test interface.

Quantitative Analysis
Data Sufficiency - 10 of 15 correct
Problem Solving - 14 of 22 correct

Verbal Analysis
Critical Reasoning - 9 of 14 correct
Reading Comprehension - 9 of 14 correct
Sentence Correction - 6 of 13 correct

What did this test do to me ?

Pros :
-> Put brakes on my building over-confidence that i can score on upper 750 range on GMAT.
-> Gave me a whole bunch of wrong answers which i can review and modify my test skills.
-> Took IR on a timed interface and helped me accurately gauge my skills and timing.

Cons :
-> IR Interface sucks. The drop down on tables problem did not work & the questions were a lot ambiguous(That explains partly the low score on IR). If any Kaplan Experts are listening, PM me and i can mail you the question numbers and the ambiguity in them.
-> The questions seem a little off beat to the traditional GMATPrep/OG12 question setting. I found RCs in verbal quite difficult than normally would have been.
-> Verbal part has lesser sentence correction question than any normal GMAT would have.

Key Takeaways:
-> For anyone planning to practice on IR - You may attempt the Kaplan test. You can attempt one for free.
-> I have heard Kaplan tests are quite tough and it shows. I wish there was a scaling factor to consider what is my appropriate level on actual GMAT. Nevertheless, review your mistakes. For all its worth, challenges are better faced head on.

Challenge Accepted !

Just took the First Kaplan CAT With IR. Prior to taking the test i worked from 9 to 3, sat in the library and practiced IR ( All the QP 1 questions from GMAC) and some q and V questions (total 1 and a half hour) and then decided to take a test despite of having been exhausted as i though that this would be a challenge and since i have plenty of MGMAT CAT's left i really was not planning on doing any Kaplan test so this would be a bonus. I scored a 650, which is LLOOOOOWWW when compared to what i have been getting elsewhere, but i do not know what my Q V scores are, only percentiles are told, and according to Kaplan test i have a V 66% or rather Less then 66 % which is the lowest i have ever got ( Having taken 2 GMAT PREP's, 2 MGMAT's and 2 Veritas Prep CAT's the lowest in V i got was a 38 or 39). In quant it says Less then 85%. I do not understand why Kaplan simply does not give raw Q V scores (like the GMAT and the other test prep companies) .. I Think that quant was perhaps a bit OFF given that i got 3 or 4 probability and P & C questions which is the most i have seen in one sitting (from the official and non-official CAT's that i have taken so far) .. Verbal was simply BAD , this is the worst CR performance of my life, and that too at the back of a 100% CR Score on Medium - HARD CR from Question Pack 1 (all timed and done in one sitting)..Even in MGMAT the max i have missed is 3 CR questions in one sitting with 100% right in CAT 1. I really do not know how the scoring algorithm works in Kaplan so cannot comment on whether it has scored me LOWER or HIGHER but all i can say is that a lot of CR questions were way off when compared to Official CR questions.
