Is work experience necessary? Post Wed Jul 11, 2012 11:00 pm
Hi,
I have seen that almost all the candidates have work experience. What are the chances of a candidate who is applying immediately after graduation? Can internships be considered under work experiences? Is having no work experience a serious disadvantage?

It is extremely rare to get into school without any work experience. You will likely need a prior relationship with the school or university to make this happen.

Is it any better if you are from a top university and have good GPA and GMAT score? Do the internships come under considerations?

Unless its a program DESIGNED for people with no work experience (MiM programs, HBS 2+2), none. Smile

Thanx for the replies.
I graduate from IIT next june and i was planning to apply for next fall. Do you think it would be better to apply after getting some work experience or can i try for next fall?

The rule of thumb is to have at least a minimum of two years work experience unless you are applying to a program specifically designed for no work experience, such as the HBS 2+2 program, the MSc in Management degree (e.g. LBS - http://www.london.edu/programmes/mastersinmanagement.html), or joint degrees like an MBA/JD or MBA/MD in which the other degree (JD or MD) normally accepts graduates from college without prior experience.

Specifically to loukya, generally you would want to gain some work experience in your chosen field prior to applying. Since you are graduating from an IIT there will hopefully be many opportunities for you.

Good luck,
