TOPIC: "The most effective way for managers to assign work is to divide complex tasks into their simpler component parts. This way, each worker completes a small portion of the task but contributes to the whole." Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

    ESSAY:
I believe that the concept of breaking down a complex task into simple ones is an effective way of getting the job done. A effective manager can find it more convinient and effetive for number of reasons like ease of getting a complex task done on time, worker competency, avoid worker burnout, effective resource allocation, monitor performance of each worker effectively.

Firstly, A complex task itself can take months to complete if it is taken on as a whole by the manager. An effective manager would know that he has to get the job done within the deadline. So it will be only more convinient for him to breakdown a complex task into its smaller parts. For example, suppose a manager of a car assembly can break down the task into smaller portions. Some workers fit in the doors, some put in the dash boards, some fix in the seats, some put in the windscreen and so on. At the end the the complex task of car assembly has been broken down to it smaller components rather then all the workers working on the car at the same time, each worker can work on one car at a time to do their respective assigned task.

Secondly, The manager must know what are his workers basic competencies are. He knows what worker A is good at and what kind of task worker B can do effectively. So by assigning each worker a task according to their competencies, manager ensures that each worker gives his 100 percent.

A manager can avoid worker burnouts as well by assigning smaller portion of a task so that their concentration and output level does not get effected. However, the manager has to be careful to maintain balance in task assignments meaning some workers getting very simple tasks then others.

As a manager breaks down a task, his ability to allocate resources effecitvely also increases. He is able to monitor resource allocation to each task in a better way. For example, in a car assemble he knows how many windscreen he has to allocate per day and how many nuts and bolts were used.

Performance monitoring of worker will also be easy for a manager who tends to break down a complex task. It is easy for him to know how much each worker has been working to complete the assigned task. And if all workers were working on the same car at a time, it would be hard to know each workers contribution.

To conclude, It must be stressed however, that the manager has to be careful not to oversimply a task. Because if he oversimplies, it would take him longer to execute a task. The same practice of breaking down a complex task was put forth by Henry Ford for the first time and all car manufacturers today have implemented it to their assembly line.
