Indian - Profile Evaluation Request

by penguinfoot » Mon Jun 11, 2012 5:59 am
The below is my synopsis of my profile. I know that i have to make sure all the elements fall into place. Just let me know if the overview of my journey is good enough for the top-three.

Indian/Male/23/2 yrs Work-Ex

Academics
730 (Q50, V39) - First attempt - I was expecting a 740 - a lil disappointed. Should i re-take it ?
8.91 (out of 10) from a Top 10 Engineering College of India

Professional
Working as a Functional Consultant. The industry is Technology - but i would classify my work type as involving "information flow". I work on an ERP system.
I work for a Fortune 500 company - Energy and Energy Utilities Sector. The company's market is for Premium Products.
Promoted within 5 months of joining the organization (but this is more like a shift - The higher management said they found growth potential in me and are willing to promote me to a team with better responsibilities)
Became team lead of this team within an year of joining (I've had my failures - esp since i was young and inexperienced - and i have learnt a lot from them. Now that i look back - i am thankful to those failures)
Global process controller - Basically i am responsible for Business continuity and the processes aimed to achieve the same.
Work Load Manager & Backlog manager - Works of a team lead : I am responsible for allocating work to my fellow team members and also to make sure that no work is pending for long without a justified reason.
Travelling to France(next month) to represent my team for drafting project plan on GRC (SAP stuff ...)
Personal connect with SVP of the organization - we both share the same alma matter.

Extra Curricular Activities
Active Volunteer for Child Guidance Centre - Esp during the annual sale.
(CGC is an organization which aims to help mentally handicapped people by teaching them to perform regular activities & also to foster living by selling some of the products created by them such as Hand-Knit decors, Terracotta Idols, ...)
Not sure if this looks bad on my profile - but i was not involved for 4 years with the organization - during my engineering - my college was very far from my home town & my travel schedules were conflicting with the term-end schedule.
Verito: an NGO aimed at using technology to better the lives of rural people. I was quite connected to this movement - Joined as a novice. Became project leader within 1 year. I am currently working on a project involved at using weather gauges at the field to reduce revenue loss from harsh climate. We have talked to the Village council and got 1 Lakh approved for installation and maintenance of the climate alert systems.
PlayJoomla : Editor and Article Critic of College Technology Forum. I still visit the forum but on a less frequency basis.

Personal Activities
Class representative during College.
Huge fan of Linux, Active Supporter of Open Source Software and Love Gadgets
Ambassador for Fedora (A distro of Linux) - During College.
Technical Head for college Linux User Group.
I Love Music.
Was the college DJ. For cultural and festival events.
Audio Engineer for our company's year-end Party. With over 1 million INR as the party budget - i have little scope for error.
Organizer for College Cultural Fest - Events Organization & Planning
Associated with Company's event management team - Aimed at uplifting family spirit, within the organisation, through recreational activities.
Algorithmist (National Competition by ISTE) - Second Place.
Green Olympiad Merit Candidate and School Topper.
Hockey Championduring school.

MBA Goals *Note i am planning to return to the same company*
Short term : I want to shift my job function to get involved with Strategy and Operations. I have had an overview of different factors contributing to operation dynamics within an organization - during my experience. I feel MBA will provide me with the mindset and required tools to accomplish this.
Long term : I see myself, 10 years down the line, heading the whole business unit of SAP project. Operations would be an inherent challenge but i should also be familiar with Finance, Marketing - Some of the other things i wish to learn at a B-school.

Additional Points
Completed Online Course on Game Theory by Stanford - Also have the Certification of Accomplishment detailing my passing grade.
Additionally, Also have completed Statistics (from Harvard) and Economics (from UC Berkley) online courses.
Involved with my Cousin for vendor procurement for his little startup (Dairy Farm). Not much of contributions.

Let me know if you need any additional data to comment about my profile. I don't need a full evaluation. But an overview of pros & cons - if any - would be helpful.
"Hakunamatata" - No Worries.

First of all, most awesome use of colors in your post. Makes for great clarity! (And looks miiighty good)

No need retake your GMAT. Your GMAT is awesome. Top school GMAT averages are around 710-715. You are above that. At this point an extra 10 points on the GMAT will do little for your application. You need to concentrate on your other elements - your thoughts, your goals, your essays, recommendations, resume. Don't worry, you'll have your work cut out for you!

Your grades are great too. And you seem to have a done a lot of very diverse things during your studies, which from what I can see should really help you set up yourself as more than "just another candidate".

Your work experience is a bit on the low side, but since you are planning on returning to your firm, and applying to H/S/W that should be less of a problem, given that they pull more and more folks younger and younger. What about your firm? Are they supporting you in this? Financially? Morally or otherwise? Have you been offered a management position upon your return, should you do an MBA? Things like this can give a GREAT boost to your profile, because you become more than just a "Candidate with dreams", but a candidate with solid, realizable dreams with an entire corporate structure behind you, which can be helpful in making your application attractive.

Plus, I would suggest as much as possible, using whatever facts you have (promotions, raises, reviews, responsibilities) to show that you have done more than anyone else in those short two years.

And that should be a good start.

Thanks a lot, Jon. It must have taken considerable time to read my lengthy profile and also to comment on it. Thanks again.

Yes. Morally - my Manager, N+1 are very supportive of me getting an MBA. My organization has a policy for sponsoring employees for higher education. But i can initiate it only after i gain admission into a college - Since the request for loan/scholarship(the numbers) from the company may vary depending on where i get admitted. Moreover, the life cycle of my application for financial sponsorship from the company takes from 1.5 - 2 months. So planning to apply in R1.

One question, maybe the last - Should numbers (such as pay hike and bonus) be published on one's essays and/or resumes ? Doesn't this provoke boasting attitude in a person ?
Promotions and Responsibilities may be my strongest point. But the problem comes when pay hike comes into picture - In numbers : I am lower than many of my team mates - But in Percents : I think i am higher. Because our Hike percentages & bonus percentages are decided on factors such as individual performance, appreciation mails and process improvement initiatives. I joined the organization straight from college (which is why my salary is lesser than many experienced people) and while i hold only 2 years of experience - most of my team is 5+ years experienced.

Ask as many questions as you like. that's what the forum is for! :)
And for all the other folks to have a look at too.

So first, reading your firm's support. It's good news. You can use this in your essays writing that "If admitted to school xxx, I will get position yyy" Or whatever is true... but let them know that you are getting supported. And anything concrete about that.

Nest question r.e. bonuses etc. YES. Write it. 100%. In your resume. In your essays if its a part of a result... For example you write a story about leading project X. Its successful. You give the results. And then you write "I was also offered the largest bonus for that year out of 500 employees. It's business school! You are supposed to boast! (well not exactly... you shouldn't write "I am great" but you should use the FACTS to show your success). And of course use whatever numbers/measurables which make your advancement seem the strongest. If its the money use the money, if its the percentages, use the percentages.

Wow ... your reply eased off some questions lingering in my mind from a long time.
Ok - some more questions : :D

1) I have a very supportive manager. But her Written English is not that great. I have told her that it is OK that she writes my LORs and that simple spelling or grammatical mistakes are fine with the adcomm. Your thoughts on this ?
2) I have worked on a project which involved migration of users from Oracle (a US company) ERP to SAP (a German company) ERP. Can i quote this in my applications ? Will there be some biased thoughts on this. At the end of the day - people like me may cause revenue loss for some US companies :)
3) I have never been to US - but i have traveled to Europe (Majorly France). Will this work as a disadvantage to me ? Moreover, I have not worked as closely with US, Mexico and Canada Key users as with European users. Considering the global footprint of my company - will this look bad on my essays ? Justification : Major business for my project/platform was from Europe.
4) LORs from colleagues - Can i defer this option to some of the regional business personnel who have seen me work on field ? I have some great appreciation mails from these folks :)

Thanks a ton in advance for answering these questions :D

Sure thing dude! That's why the forum is here. so let's tackle these babies one by one.

1. Totally cool if there are English issues, although there shouldn't be gross mispellings etc. The most important thing is that it be excited, and that she use her real voice. If her written English is REALLY bad, maybe there's an assistant who can look it over?
2. Don't war about it. It's not a war of nationalisms. Business is business,a nd if you did your job well, then you want to show it.
3.Not necessarily. It is VERY good that you have REAL international experience. Sure, maybe there would be a slight advantage to having worked in the US too, but really minor. What's important is that you know how to conduct yourself and succeed in a truly global multinational.
4. I would suggest against using your colleagues for your official recommenders. Otherwise, if you have a colleague who was an alma mater of the specific school you will be applying at, by all means (in most cases) have them send a short note to the ADcom.

Anything else??
:)

Hi Jon,

Thanks again for the answers. A more specific question :

-> HBS is considered the toughest school to get into. Do you think my profile is good enough to be a harvard graduate ?

Thanks & Regards,
Penguingoot.
