GMAT Score 690-should I retake?

by Rucha V » Sat Jan 03, 2015 2:13 am
Hi,
I took my GMAT yesterday and scored 690 (Quant - 45, 63 Percentile; Verbal - 40, 91 Percentile) with overall Percentile 87. My target score was 700+ and with good preparation and growing improvements also I could not achieve it. I am now little bit confused about the next step. As already some application deadlines are closer for 2nd and even 3rd round, I am not sure whether to go with this score or retake the exam. My breakup of the score does not show 75+ Percentile in Quant and I am biology bachelors(Learning level of Maths upto 12th Std.). Again, I am from India where majority of students get very good quant percentile (which is not the case with me). I am unsure about the necessity of retaking of the exam and improving the quant score. I would really appreciate if someone can guide me regarding the decision.

I guess that depends on how you feel about applying Round 3. Also, if you decide to retake it, in order to drive the score higher, probably you should consider what you can change about your perception of the test and how to prepare.

For one thing, your quant score on an absolute basis is actually pretty high, but in order to drive it even higher you may need to see the section less as a math test and more as a game. Often people who are used to using a lot of math run a little slow in GMAT math because they approach the problems as they would math problems, when actually GMAT quant is different from them, more like logic games and more a test of vision and of skill in using resources to achieve aims.

Well, it depends on the rest of your profile - but let's put it this way, unless your profile is REALLY unique, just forget about R3, and go for it next year.

R3 is way way too tough (essentially all the places are filled and the schools are looking for pleasant "surprises" to displace someone on the waitlist), so unless you have a REALLY really good reason, I'd suggest waiting till next year.

Best,
Jon

Don't try for R3 > focus on next year. As for if you need to retake the GMAT...that really depends on where you want to apply. Applying to a top 20 program? Yeah, you should retake that test. Something lower? Then maybe not. There's no one size fits all answer...butttt....we have an entire video series answering EXACTLY this question > check them out: [Should I Retake the GMAT? 5 Part Video Series]
