GMAT Prep CAT 1 - 730 - Q50, V38 - Need SC help Post Sun Mar 25, 2012 2:49 am

I have taken the GMAT Prep Test CAT 1 (This is a retake. I took this test once in Nov,2011) and i felt i got 2 SC questions and 2 CR questions repeated in verbal. 2 DS and 1 PS problem repeated in quant.

I have taken 4 practice tests before : (in reverse chronological order)

I was excited with scoring 740 on Veritas Prep and wanted to check if indeed i am in that range.

Quantitative : 4 wrong of 37 Question - I have reviewed the incorrect - 2 of the wrong questions aer because i misread the question in hurry.

Verbal : 9 wrong of 41 question. Of these 9, 2 are CR questions and 7 are SC questions. I have detailed below the details of my errors. From initial glance it looks like i need specific help in SC section.

Quote:
Q.No Quest Type (*) Sub Function
    4 Sentence Correction Idioms
10 Sentence Correction Grammar & Idioms
    12 Critical Reasoning Evaluate Argument
13 Sentence Correction Modifiers & Verbs
    19 Critical Reasoning Strengthen Argument
20 Sentence Correction Verb & Pronoun
22 Sentence Correction Grammar & Idioms
32 Sentence Correction Idioms & Verbs
    41 Sentence Correction Grammar
Also, on depth analysis of the above mistakes : I got to know i am weak in Idioms, Verb Tense and Nuance Grammar. Can anyone help me with the best material for this ?

Thanks & Regards,
Penguinfoot.

How do you work on RCs with no mistakes ? That's totally insane Evil or Very Mad. I struggle so hard to improve it. What is your strategy ? For SC practice is the key. I have improved much by answering the questions in the forum. Try to explain each and every mistake in every choice for every question posted in the SC forum. If you don't know search for it, learn it and explain it. If you have any prep company book, try to learn that concept again which you din't know as explanations will be useful only to an extent but learning it as a whole from the book is different. If you find something new note it down. Revisit the notes everyday. You will see the difference in few days. Hope it helps !!

My strategy may be a bit off the traditional approach - But i read the whole passage. And it helped me answer them with a good accuracy. I have found the following on my experience with RCs :

For long Passages :
I read the whole passage and answer all the questions. It takes me a little over 5 min to read the whole passage. But the questions against such a passage are quite easy and take less than a minute to answer.

For short passages :
I read the whole passage - but when i am done, i am left with thoughts such as "Hey, nice idea - will it work ?" or "That is a controversial approach" and such. It takes me a little less than 4 minutes to read the passage. But the questions require thinking and passage lookup. These questions on an average take 1 and 1/2 minute.

I know my approach is not the best one - But paraphrasing and noting points kinda leave me confused and wastes my time. I am a fast reader but a slow writer. I read a lot of books - So i am used to this kind of approach.
Disclaimer : In the GMATprep i took, I consider my RC accuracy a fluke - i am holding 2-3 RCs for mistakes on real test.

Thanks for the tips on SC - I suck at this. It sometimes happen that an answer to a question (READ : Official GMAT Review questions) sounds very off beat and makes me wonder if GMAC is controlled by robots. If so, the end is near. Machines will take over human race.

Is there any comprehensive rule list as such for the SC ? Such as : This is correct , This is not. That would help.

Regards.

There is no comprehensive rule list as such, but you have BTG flash cards, spidey's SC notes and a lot similar to these. Check it in below link. Some of them are out dated so be careful with those. Or if you are starting from scratch review all those and while you learn make your own rule list.
