Beat The GMAT

Hi,

Can anyone out here help me with a strategy of taking this gruesome test again. I took it for the first time in December and got a score of 630(q47 v30). I actually dont know what exactly happened on that day, my mock scores were very decent and obviously that increased my expectations alot but now I feel I dont know what and where to start with again. I aimed at HEC , IE and HKUST before giving the exam and yes I can apply there with a 10% chance but I do feel I should give it another shot, so any strategy any suggestions any plan of action will surely be appreciated.

Couple of questions first:

What did you do before to prepare?
Which study guides do you have?
What were you scoring on your CAT exams?

How is it going

1. I did the following
- OG 10 and 12
- Manhattan SC
- SC 1000 series
- With Mathematics I did lil bit of Kaplan

2. In my mocks I was scoring 710 plus in all my gmat prep exams and 630 on kaplan.

Was the 30 you received in Verbal pretty consistent with how you had been doing in verbal? I would have anticipated your score being more in line with the 710 vs. the 630 since the GMAT Prep exams are more closely related to the actual test than Kaplan is.

I also think that a lot of people underestimate the "nerves" factor during their first sitting. It's an intimidating test and you're never thinking as clearly as you would had it have been a CAT exam.

I would suggest going back through the verbal guides again. I have the PowerScore SC & CR Bible. Where would you say your weakness is among SC, CR, and RC?

No actually my verbal score was more in the range of 35-38 and quant also higher than this, but RC and SC has been a problem for me, I somehow manage CR but yeah do goof up on some of the tough ones. How helpful is the LSAT LR Bible. Hmm nerves yeah maybe but a drop of about 80-90 points from my mocks anyways. Any techniques on increasing your accuracy in RC? Thanks for your help.

When you're preparing for Reading Comp, make sure that you identify each question type before attempting to answer the question. All of the Reading Comp questions have a critical reasoning counterpart, so identify the question type and then proceed to finding the answer the same way that you would approach CR. The most important thing is to develop a reading style that you are comfortable with. Make sure that the style will work with long and short passages. Good luck.
