Hi,

Thanks for the help you guys are providing here. Could you please apply your expertise and shed some light on my profile too? Thanks for your time and effort.

I plan to apply for an MBA specializing in Finance. This is a short summary of my profile followed by a wishlist of schools. Would be grateful if you could summarize the possible negative points that would bar me from being a strongly competitive candidate. Thanks again for your time.



GMAT: 730

3 yrs work experience at 2 top-tier investment banks (Interbank Forex Middle Office)

CFA Level 2 candidate June 2010.

Undergrad GPA : 3.6 - 4.0 (BBA Finance Mumbai University)
(only 15 years of education. My GPA estimate is based on me acheiving the highest grade conferred by the university i.e. First Class with Distinction throughout my undergrad degree )

Extracurriculars - Headed the events committee while in college. Won competitions for guitar instrumental and vocal and debates. Have learnt 2D and 3D graphics and animation as a hobby. Formerly a Rotaract member.

Community Activities - None documented but there are a few informally done activities which I could probably mention on the essays?

Wishlist:
NYU Stern
ISB
Columbia
Stanford

Should I be considering any other schools which might be strongly suited to my profile?

Hello, Vik,

I can’t really answer because you say you have experience at top-tier i-banks - but you don’t mention what that work is. It could be in any range of areas, from core finance roles to IT roles to administrative roles. The profile would vary significantly for each of these situations. In addition, you don’t describe the quality of your work performance -whether you can demonstrate that you’re a high-performing fast-track professional who excels among an already accomplished group, or whether you’re “merely” a strong performer would affect the evaluation a lot. Finally, you don’t provide information about the goals, which would have a bearing in various ways.

The lack of current extracurriculars would be a negative, especially at Columbia, Stanford, and NYU. The CFA would obviously be a plus. If your role is IT, it would place you in the over-represented Indian-IT category, which would be a drawback.

Without more information about your role and your performance, I really can’t speculate about the potential for your candidacy at these schools.
