GMAT:650 - Please help with profile evaluation

Post Mon Dec 19, 2011 2:54 pm
Hello Sir,

I need help with college selection and profile evaluation. Please see my details below:

GMAT - 650
AWA - awaited
GPA - 2.5
Work ex - 5.5 years in IT
2 years in US (client location) as Team lead
Was Vice president of a Company Outreach program for 3 years.
Have worked with Company HR in organizing many of their programs.
Received Above and beyond award last year for my work.
My project received most Innovative project award

I am looking for 1year or 2 year full time MBA programs in US or India. I plan to apply for the ongoing R2 for some colleges. If not possible, I can wait a year and apply for 2013 fall. By then I'll have 6.5 years of experience.

Greatly appreciate your help. I expected a 700 in GMAT, but with a low score, I am little lost and need help.

Hmmm. We need a bit more info. Where are you from? Are you an American candidate or International?
Do you lead any people? who many? what is your employer? and what about volunteer work?

Essentially, if you have a 650 you aim for schools that are within your range. Depending on the rest of your profile, it might be higher or lower, but it's likely out of the top 15 schools.

Thanks for your response.

Here are further details:

GMAT (Q:49; V:29)

I am working with Cognizant Technology Solutions. Currently, I am leading a team of 6 and I work at client location. I am from India, I did my Engineering in India.

Volunteer work - I was part of this Cognizant's internal team of volunteers, founded by the employees. We supported many orphanages, carried out blood donation drives, stationary collection, environment support programs, etc. I was the vice-president of the group (200 members) in Bangalore Cognizant. Soon I was included in the Outreach Board committee in Bangalore. Outreach was another such program at Cognizant corporate level. The Board had 6 members including the SP, VP of Cognizant -Blr.

I don't mind getting into 30-40 rank schools, but the requirement is that the added degree should help improve my profile to quiet some extent. I was more inclined towards one-year full time mba courses, but I couldn't find many. Also, I am not sure if I am eligible for Executive mba. If both these options are not available, I can go with 2-year full time mba.

Would you suggest a part-time program for me?

Well first of all, I think if you haven't written your applications yet, you are a bit late in the game, and you are much better off waiting till next year. Which will also give you the distinct advantage of tacking another crack at the GMAT.

If you plan on working in the US, then a part time program is not for you in my opinion, unless you have a job there.

For schools, I would say about the 25-45 range is approximately for you (Assuming you don't get a higher GMAT) You can look at Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, Kelly, and others...
what I would suggest is going through the entire list looking at Average GMAT, postMBA employment, employment industry, tuition and salary. This will help you get a a good original idea, and then once you know a bit more, revert back here with your questions.

As for one year courses, you have Kellogg and Cornell, but those are likely out of range, unless you improve your GMAT, and then there are a lot in Europe.

Thanks...

I'll try once more after a month. If nothing works I'll apply for 2013 fall. Thanks for your help. I'll re-post on this thread once I take my GMAT again.

Hi,

I was not able to take up GMAT again. Now, I am planning to apply for Part-time MBA in USA. I plan to apply to Rochester, University of Texas, Carnegie Mellon, McCombs, Marshall, Rice University. I think with my score and experience, Part-time MBA in these colleges should be in reach. Please advise.

Thanks.

Hmmm, well part time and full time are totally different programs. Part time programs are usually better if you are working full-time simultaneously. Is this the case for you?
