Hi,

I recently took the GMAT exam and scored a 610 (V29, Q45). Am confused whether I should retake it or apply to some good colleges where I feel I can get in based on my profile (mentioned below) and other factors.

What are the best colleges in sync with my GMAT score and profile? Requesting your help in the matter.

My Profile:

1. B.Tech Graduate (Zero Experience in IT Industry as I chose another career path)
2. Sports Journalist at The Times of India.
3. Marketing Strategist at Star Sports (Star India Pvt Ltd).
4. 5 years Work Experience.

There are a lot of MBA programs that will accept you with this score, but the question is, are these thes schools you really want to attend? Without a sense of your career goals and perhaps also a geographic focus (US, Europe, Asia?), I don't really have enough material to advise you comprehensively; however, with a 610 GMAT, you'll want to apply to schools with an average GMAT of 640 or below, so that you're not too far below their median. The best schools with this profile tend to start appearing around #40 on the Forbes or Bloomberg rankings.

Should you retake? If you think you can do better, absolutely! A higher score increases your chances substantially, by making you competitive for a wider range of schools. But thinking about your career goals, and learning which programs are best suited to help you achieve these goals, would also help you focus on the schools that best meet your needs.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot Margaret for replying.

I'm looking for an MBA (General Management) with a specialization later towards the Marketing/Sports Management domain. I'm looking for colleges in Asia, Europe and Canada.

Wanted to know specifically whether colleges like Nanyang, NUS Business School and HKUST would take me based on my GMAT and work profile.

Also, on a related note, would like to know your thoughts on Amsterdam Business School and whether it is a good option for me. I would like to know how the placements for that college are as I intend to settle in the Netherlands after I finish my MBA.

Thanks a lot again for taking the time and replying to my query.

Regards

Hi Ankur,
Thanks for the clarifications! I'm not a specialist on these particular schools, so my response here is more general: your GMAT is rather below the median for schools like HKUST and Nanyang, so if you want to be competitive for these programs you should definitely retake it. For Amsterdam Business School you're closer to their median (seems to be around 630) so the GMAT would be less of an issue. You might also consider Rotterdam, which is a much more highly ranked school and would give you that base in the Netherlands that you seek, but again, your GMAT is a bit low for them at present.

By the way, if you're passionate about sports management, there are several highly ranked Masters programs specifically for this area, including some in Europe (UK, Spain, etc) and Columbia University in New York.

Good luck!
