A garden measuring 40m by 50m is to be surrounded by a flagstone walkway 5m wide. If each stone is rectangular and has the dimensions 2m by 1m, how many stones will be need to cover the walkway?
A.250
B.275
C.425
D.450
E.500
I understand what needs to be done in the sum...What I don't understand is how to find the area of the lawn and the walk, both together...The area of the lawn is 50*40... |

You have the area of the garden and this is surrounded by a 5m walkway all along the garden.
The garden area is 40x50
The are of the garden + the area of the walkway is (40+5+5)*(50+5+5)
There is a rectangle inside another rectangle. |

area of the garden + walkway = 50*60 = 3000
area of the garden = 40*50 =2000
area of the walkway =3000-2000 = 1000
area of the stone = 2*1 =2
No. of stones = 1000/2 =500
Hence E.
Let me know if you still have any doubts. |
