    Galileo did not invent the telescope, but on hearing, in 1609, that such an optical instrument had been made, he quickly built his own device from an organ pipe and spectacle lenses.
    A. Galileo did not invent the telescope, but on hearing, in 1609, that such an optical instrument had been made, he
    B. Galileo had not invented the telescope, but when he heard, in 1609, of such an optical instrument having been made,
    C. Galileo, even though he had not invented the telescope, on hearing, in 1609, that such an optical instrument had been made, he
    D. Even though Galileo did not invent the telescope, on hearing, in 1609, that such an optical instrument had been made,

    In a forum I read that one of the reason why the right answer is not B is that "having been made" is not in the right tense.
    I wanted to know if the following could be a right answer:
    Galileo did not invent the telescope, but when he heard, in 1609, such an optical instrument being made,he

    I also wanted to know if the final "he" is compulsory. In my opinion it is

    the reason why D is wrong is that it lacks the final "he"? and is there another reason?

    (B), as per your modifications, would still be wrong. "did not invented" is double past tense and is a big NO NO.

    your reasoning for (D) is correct.

    We need the final "he" to give us a subject after the conjunction "but."

    If we use "and" to link two clauses, we do need a second subject:

    I went to the lake yesterday, and now I have a sunburn.

    "such an optical instrument being made" doesn't work. We can't use an -ing verb on its own (unless as a participle or gerund); it needs a linking verb.

    Ok, then my question is: if I use "having being made" it refers to "that haas been made", what do I have to use as gerund to refer to "that was made"?
