extremely atypical applicant, probably Post Fri Mar 02, 2012 7:21 pm
Hi Stacy,
I am a former academic (I have a PHD in math) who is considering a switch to finance, international business, management consulting, or possibly the administrative end of higher education. I was curious as to my chances at b-school admission before I embark on the application process.

Profile:

education:
1. BA in history and French from top 40 school in US News Rankings, GPA 3.39
2. MS and PHD in mathematics form the same school, GPA 3.65
3. certificate in higher education management

GRE:
750 Math, 730 Verbal

work experience:
Teaching assistant, tutor, lab/recitation leader and facilitator while in graduate school: 5+ years
Visiting Assistant professor at public 4-year institution: 9 months
Teacher at local community college: 1 summer term
work-study as undergrad: 4 years

additional:
fluent in 4 languages, lived abroad

I know Stanford has a dual MBA/Masters in higher education program. I'm also considering several other 1st and 2nd tier schools.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
lola0177

Hi lola0177,

You have a strong application, however admissions teams will want to hear a strong reason for you pursuing an MBA, particularly with all of the degrees you currently have. The last thing an admissions team will want is an applicant who they believe is just collecting degrees.

Additionally, business schools are looking to cultivate future leaders, so any leadership and management experience you can discuss will be very important.
