Double metrix

by j_shreyans » Wed Oct 22, 2014 3:25 am
At a certain company, some of the employees have advanced degrees and some have one year or more of work experience. If 20 percent of all employees have one year or more of experience and no advanced degree, what percentage of employees have advanced degrees and less than one year of experience?

(1) 35 percent of the employees do not have advanced degrees and 55 percent have less than one year of work experience.

(2) 15 percent of the employees lack an advanced degree and have less than one year of work experience; 45 percent have one year or more of experience.

Can we solve this by double matrix?

Can we solve this by double matrix?
This is an EITHER/OR group problem.
Every employee EITHER has an advanced degree OR does not.
Every employee EITHER has 1+ years of work experience OR has <1 year.
For an EITHER/OR group problem, we can use a GROUP GRID (also known as a double-matrix) to organize the data.
In a group grid, the entries in any given row or column must add up to the TOTAL of that row or column.

Let the total number of employees = 100.
20 percent of all employees have one year or more of experience and no advanced degree.
Here is the grid:

The question stem asks for the percentage of employees who have advanced degrees and less than one year of experience (represented in the grid by a question mark).

Statement 1: 35 percent of the employees do not have advanced degrees and 55 percent have less than one year of work experience.
Entering 35 into the bottom box of the middle column and 55 into the rightmost box of the second row, we get the following grid:
Image
Thus, the percentage who have advanced degrees and less than one year of experience = 40.
SUFFICIENT.

Statement 2: 15 percent of the employees lack an advanced degree and have less than one year of work experience; 45 percent have one year or more of experience.
Entering 15 into the center box of the middle column and 45 into rightmost box of the top row, we get the following grid:
Image
Thus, the percentage who have advanced degrees and less than one year of experience = 40.
SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is D.

I thought I'd point out that Mitch's "group grid" approach (also known as the Double Matrix Method) can be used for most questions featuring a population in which each member has two characteristics associated with it.
Here, we have a population of employees, and the two characteristics are:
- has advanced degree, or doesn't have advanced degree
- has one year of work experience, or doesn't have one year of work experience

This question type is VERY COMMON on the GMAT, so be sure to master the technique.

To learn more about the Double Matrix Method, watch our free video: https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gmat- ... ems?id=919
