Topic: Doctor of Medicine, average GPA and Moderate GMAT score
PostWed Oct 07, 2009 9:24 am

I m devastated with my GMAT score today, as i have got 640.
My profile is

Education: Medicine graduate from Delhi University
GPA: 60% - ranked 10 (considering only 40% students pass without any supplementary examination)

GMAT: 640(q49 v28)

Experience: 4.5 years(by next fall) varies from

Residency in a government Hospital 1 yr
Private practice with a group of doctors 1 yr
Consulting Firm 1.5 yrs till date

Extracurricular: Social work in rural settings, donation camps, setting up of cultural club in organization etc..

I was targeting following schools:
TUCK
DARDEN
DUKE

But, i m confused regarding my candidature for these schools.
I haven't seen any medicos being listed in the general MBA program class profile (i do not want to go into health care focused program as i want to get the flexibility of a general MBA program and combine it with my professional experience.)
Kindly help me out in this dilemma..[/list]

Hello and sorry for the delay in responding --have been very busy w/ paying clients (including one in India!).

But on to your question...

There is a LONG tradition of physicians going to business school. Some come out into something that is not medicine related and some go into hospital administration or public health type stuff.

I would NOT be discouraged or concerned by the fact that MDs are not listed in the typical class profiles. There just aren't enough of them. But, small numbers do not mean that the path that you are proposing is not a well-trod one.

In terms of your GMAT score, a 640 is far from ideal but I would be sure to remember that you have a very good (more accurately, an outstanding) quant score. You are probably fluent in English but there is also a good chance that you don't have much formal training in grammar / syntax and may not have had much preparation in critical reading, etc.

You are certainly a candidate at the programs that you are talking about though, as you mention, something of a wildcard. I think that if I were you I would expand my list to include some schools that are still very good but not quite as prestigious. Indiana and UNC - Chapel Hill both come to mind.
