exactly!money9111 wrote:Oh I didn't realize that about Yale.... I guess I figured that all MBA programs were siloed. That could be a good thing or a bad thing... I have gotten the sense about the students & alumni @ Tuck. They are incredibly helpful and the school pride is second to none.
So from what I gather... @ Yale SOM you're a Yale Student first then a Yale SOM student, whereas @ Dartmouth you're a Tuck Student first that happens to be @ Dartmouth...
Dartmouth Tuck or Yale SOM

i love learning by example... it's much easier for me... i'm just not sure I'd fit in with the culture down there in Virginia... only one way to find out though

I don't know, it may be better than you think. I'm from the midwest and went to undergrad in the South and it wasn't a bad experience for the most part. With a top 20 MBA program, you will have classmates from all over the glove anyway. Odds are your circle will consist of people from Darden as well as other professional school students (probably law). Their grad programs attract people from all regions, so the only thing overly Southern would be the weather. Trust me, that will be a welcome change during this time of year...lolmoney9111 wrote:i love learning by example... it's much easier for me... i'm just not sure I'd fit in with the culture down there in Virginia... only one way to find out though

ah yes.. warm weather can never hurt! I'd welcome it with shorts, t-shirt, and flip flops... well not really seeing as though I'd be in an MBA program... maybe some loafers and a khaki shorts w/ a polo
I'll begin my research on Darden later this week. I wonder if they'll be at the MBA Tour this weekend... note to self - check into that.

For anyone who is interested in Tuck and would like to get some more information and speak to alumni... here is a link to Tuck Connections, where you input your interests and it matches you with an Alum who will contact you... I used this and it was priceless... I still talk to him actually...

How well would students of color fit in at Yale in your opinion?

IMO students would fit in perfectly fine. When I visited I didn't get a sense that there was any discrimination or anything of any kind. Everyone was friendly and was talking to everyone. It's a small school so you have that 1 degree of separation from everyone. It just seemed very collaborative. I will say throughout my day there... I could probably count on 1 hand (and that's pushing it) the # of students I SAW that fall into that category.

but even to that point... i didn't get a sense from anyone that it would be an issue. people are too busy to care about such things.. that's the impression I got

Do you have a visit scheduled yet? I feel like Tuck would be one of the best schools to attend, but I will have one hell of a time convincing my gf to move to Hanover!money9111 wrote:Thanks! I can't wait to visit Dartmouth

Yeah that would be a hard sell! So if you want to go into sales post-mba, that may be great practice haha. Actually that's one of the reasons I don't have a formal visit set up yet... because it's in Hanover. It's so far, I have to take off work for 2/3 days... take the Dartmouth bus from midtown manhattan, which won't be that bad because it's essentially 6 hours on a luxury charter bus with power outlets and free Wifi.
Just gotta figure out the logistics! But that's great that your GF is going to be following you to b-school!

@amazonviper you should definitely get up there and visit. would that be a long trek for you? try to go when classes are in session... not during the summer... oh and bring some cash with you because when you go to the cafeteria you have to pay even if you're on a tour
