Topic: Confused with GPrep1 Verbal score
PostFri Sep 18, 2009 12:04 pm

I am confused with my verbal score in GMAT prep1, I got a scaled score of 31 with the following spit

RC - 4 wrong
SC - 7 wrong
CR - 2 wrong
Total - 13 wrong out of 41 questions

I got three questions wrong in a row (i.e Q13, Q14 and Q15)...only thing I can think of is,
I skipped quant section by selecting random answers as I want to see where I stand in verbal section.

I don't think your quant score will affect the level of questions you will see on verbal. On my first GPrep 1 i remember getting a 40 with 9 wrong... (8 SC). So 13wrong yeilding a 31 is not out of the ball park. It means you prolly got some easy questions wrong. And of course, the 3 incorrect in a row didn't help.

My experience with verbal is that each question you get wrong is treated quite harshly... prolly 1:1 maybe more or less depending on how hard the question is... and how many in a row you get wrong. So the score is probably accurate but you'd have to ask Stacey, Ian, VP_JIm or DanaJ.

zuleron,

Thanks for your valuable assessment and also for your 198 Quant questions document, it is very useful.

Following questions went wrong

3, 7, 10, 13, 14, 15, 20, 25, 27, 31, 35, 37 and 41

I'll echo what zuleron said: each question you get wrong brings about a pretty consistent penalty.

To raise your score, we'll need more details, but here goes some general advice. Resources:
- SC: Manhattan GMAT SC guide
- CR (and to a certain extent RC): PowerScore CR Bible
- RC: start reading stuff like The Economist, WSJ
- advanced level practice for CR and RC: LSAT sets (here's two sets, but you could also buy other official LSAC stuff)

Your weakest point is SC (or so it seems - but just one test is not exactly enough to tell), so obviously you need to invest time in that one. Watch out: the SC guide is full of rules and tips, so you'll need to invest the appropriate amount of time in digesting the material.

You could also read this for a rock solid strategy, it's the one I used to get my verbal from 36 to 47. Hope this helps.

You are welcome. The placement of your errors doesn't seem too bad except for the 3 in a row. But DanaJ is right: a breakdown of the type of questions u got wrong (e.g. CR - strengthen, SC - parralelism etc.) would help in giving better advice.

The post DanaJ directed you to is EXCELLENT. I too found it and am using it... you can't argue with a 790 and a 51 in verbal.

But dude, if you got a 730 on your first GMAT, in 1 month you will easily be scoring 760 or 770... figure out what is tripping you up in verbal and you will be golden.
