Q.The rate of foreclosure of owner occupied homes in the northern countries is 75% higher than those in the southern countries.

Why can't this be the answer

The rate of foreclosure of owner occupied homes in the northern countries is 75% higher than that of those in the southern countries.

Hi trgtgmat2013,

There are a couple of reasons why the second sentence is not grammatically correct.

1) Since the sentence is based on a Comparison, the two sentence fragments should be written in Parallel "format." The extra pronoun "that" is NOT parallel to anything in the first part of the sentence.
2) The words "that" and "those" are both pronouns that mean the same thing, so you don't need them both.
