Karen was branded a "brainiac" when she began playing chess while other girls her age were playing with Barbie Dolls.

She earned her Ph.D. in Cognitive Linguistics from the University of California at San Diego, and taught as a linguistics professor for 9 years at 4 universities, including a university in Denmark.

She has one published book and numerous articles on English grammar (her area of specialization), including an entry in the MIT Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science.

Karen is the head verbal tutor at TPNY. She has taught and developed test materials for Kaplan and for the last 8 years has has tutored the GMAT. She has taught the verbal section to both native English speakers and non native speakers from around the world including Japan, Korea,Venezuela, Pakistan, and India.

Karen is the lead developer of our Verbal materials for our GMAT, SAT, ACT and MCAT Verbal Reasoning courses. She hones in with laser precision, the roots of student's verbal problems students and provides exacting guidance that students need to succeed.

Her hobbies include science fiction writing, videography and windsurfing.
