In the Business program at a university, all candidates for the MBA in International Business who entered the program after 1990 took a seminar on Microeconomics, and all candidates for the MBA in International Business who entered the program after 1994 took a seminar on Applied Economics.

If a student in the Business program described above took a seminar on Microeconomics but did not take a seminar on Applied Economics, which of the following must be true?

    A. The student entered the Business program prior to 1995.
    B. The student entered the Business program after 1990 and prior to 1995.
    C. If the student was a candidate for the MBA in International Business, then the student entered the program prior to 1994.
    D. If the student was a candidate for the MBA in International Business, then the student entered the program prior to 1991.
    E. If the student was a candidate for the MBA in International Business, then the student entered the program after 1990 and prior to 1995.

Source is Kaplan CAT. Difficulty level is high. Please choose one and explain.

Entered AFTER 1990 (entered '91, '92, '93, etc.), took Microeconimics.
Entered AFTER 1994 (entered '95, '96, '97, etc.), took Applied Econ.

Took Micro (so entered after 1990), but not Applied Eco (so entered before 1995).

    What is true?

Prediction: Student must have entered in either 1991, 1992, 1993, or 1994 if an MBA IB candidate.

    A. Correct only if a MBA IB candidate.
    B. Correct only if an MBA IB candidate.
    C. No, could have entered IN 1994.
    D. No, must have entered in 1991 or after.
    E. Correct, perfectly matches our prediction.

Thank you Vivan.. But OA is C. I also selected E. Could you explain why C would be the answer? The following is Kaplan's explanation. But it is not enough for me to understand.

Answer Choice (C) matches our prediction. It suggests that if the student was a candidate for the MBA in International Business, then the student entered the program prior to 1995. This is supported by the stimulus and is the correct choice.

    Look at this time line

If a student took ME and not AE then for sure he did not join after 1994. you cannot say for sure that he joined after 1990 simply because "some"(not all) students might have taken ME even before 1990, we just dont have the data. C is correct.

Also make a note that since there is no mention of how many seminars a person can take in his curriculum, its is also a possibility that a guy joining after 1994 can take both ME and AE. But this would probably make another question. Wink
