Business Intelligence course with Assistantship

Post Fri Jul 28, 2017 3:23 am
Hello everyone,

I graduated 1 year ago from a Business School and had one year of fulltime internship at a foreign Chamber of Commerce in my country. I wish to pursue career in Business Intelligence/ Data Analysis, and really need you advices on which schools/ which course (MBA/Master) to take.

FYI, my major at university is International Business Economics
GPA: 8.48/10; 3/48/4
GMAT: 710
IELTS: 7.5 (Btw, is this score enough? Or I need to take the test again to get 8.0?)
I am applying to get a job related to BI. I wonder whether this new job will affect my application if I apply in the 1st round? If yes, how would it affect? (the level of position I will take, reputation of the company, etc.)
Although I used to apply some econometrics tools, such as SPSS, E-views, and Stata, on final thesis, I think that I still lack a lot technical skills, especially compared to guys in Information System/ Computing. Can you please give an advice on which knowledge/tools I should self-study now?

Besides, I will appreciate if you are currently taking a course in BI/ Data Analytics and do not mind sharing Smile Please, I'm glad to hear your thoughts.

Apart from reputation of school/ the course, I want to receive scholarship also, so please consider this factor when suggesting. Thank you so much!

Hey there!
so you are likely looking for a Masters program and not an MBA which is more of a managerial training and would require at least 3-4 years of experience.

So in Masters programs there are many options. I don't think you necessarily need a Masters in Data Analytics which is an application of knowledge - often people who work in Data come from Statistics, or Mathematics backgrounds, and those types of degrees are more common and might be more relevant to you.

Really what you need if you want to continue to work in Data analytics is to gain more experience, and then to evaluate what your lacks might be, and fill that in with some sort of education, if you feel that is the best path forward.

I hope this helps!
Best,

Best,
Thank you so much, Jon.

I think I will work in this industry in 1 year, then apply to business schools. I am just so excited to come back to school right now. Also, I am afraid that the older I get, the more difficult it is for me to adapt to "school life" : (

Or, should I apply to a master program in Europe? As I observe, many biz schools in Europe accept fresh graduates without working experience.

Hope to hear your comment on this! Thanks again.

Well where you apply is up to you!

So yes, for an MBA one year of experience will be too little. In the US the average is around five years experience, and in Europe about 7-8.

But yes, if you are more interested in Masters programs, you can normally join these will no or little experience, including the MiM (Masters in Management) which is the program closest to the MBA, yet which requires no experience.

Best,
Jon
