Hi jangojess,
We can eliminate the answers with "has" in them (B and D) because we need the past tense of the verb.
Schliemann determined at the age of seven to find the site of ancient Troy and devoted his subsequent career to do it/to such an end/to that end.
We can eliminate the answer that is vague about exactly what Schliemann devoted his career to. "Do it" (A) is vague because we're not sure if Schliemann devoted his career to determining something, or finding the ancient site of Troy, or to Troy itself. "To that end" is more clear, because it suggests the goal of "to find" something. "To such an end" is not as clear, because it suggests that there are other "ends" to consider, which is not the case.
Answer E is correct!
