BAD BAD GMAT Score

by ekong002 » Tue Jul 01, 2014 6:34 pm
Hello..
I just took my GMAT exam yesterday and it was my second attempt.
I got about 590 for my first attempt, which is very low.. And I was expecting to get around 610-630 for the second attempt since my practice CATs were about in that range. However, disastrously... I got 480 which I never expected to get that low.. I guess I had some concentrating issues during the exam..
And the biggest problem is that I was overly shocked looking at the score and pressed the report option by mistake instead of cancelling the score immediately after the full exam.
So my question is... although I retake the exam and get mid-600 score, would school admissions highly consider about my 480 score and would I be disadvantaged in getting accepted to schools?
I'm really in a shock right now and I don't know what to do... I've been preparing this for about 10 months now(took a while because of my deficiency in English) and I'm really about to give up on this...
Help me!

Admissions will never see the 480. They will only see your highest score.

If you are able, as they are expensive (in the $1000s), I would suggest getting a private tutor or taking some kind of classroom preparation. Having English as your second language is definitely a difficult factor. The GMAT questions often try to trick you, which is hard even for native English speakers. In-person tutoring can definitely help this.

Look at Veritas Prep, Manhattan Prep, or research other classroom GMAT prep sessions.

Business schools do not consider the number of attempts you have given the GMAT. You can try to give it another shot and improve your score.
Try to analyse your Mock Tests and identify your weak areas and if required take help for preparation.

Good Luck!!

Well, actually they will see your score, and you need to report all scores anyways in your applications, buuuut they do only actually consider your highest score.

So take it easy, prepare yourself well, and go beat that GMAT!

Unfortunately they will see your score. You also should be careful you don't take the test too many times. Yes, schools will give you credit for your best score, but if you take the test five or six times to get there, that will typically be a strike against you. Think of this next test as your last chance and prepare appropriately. Good luck to you!
