Asking for help about the application

by songqianru » Sun May 08, 2016 6:36 am
Dear Mr or Ms consultant,

I am in a dilemma so I want to hear some opinions from you.

Last year I began to make some research because I want to become an entrepreneur, and finally I bought a licor store. I have to work after my main full-time work until now. The business has a market price 250000 dollars. Currently I want to design well the space, improve the inventory system, add more non-licor product and train well my staff, so I am pondering if I have to quit my job to do such things. At the same time, this year I want to apply to top MBA programs in the US and focus on topics such as social entrepreneurship and venture capital. Being an entrepreneur gives me a lot of ideas to help "older" people in their retirement and immigrants to settle them down (because I am an immigrant) in a new country.

Therefore I am facing with MBA preparation, business management and full-time work (financial sector) at the same time. I want to quit my job, and as a result i will lose a recommendation letter from my current workplace (it is hard to find a recommendation letter for an entrepreneur). However, if I continue to work I will miss my business and MBA preparation. My question is if quitting the job will hurt my MBA application, and If I quit the job I will ask who can write a recommendation letter for me?

I appreciate very much for any help

Kindly, Song

Song,
I'm not sure if an MBA is what you are looking for. What you are talking about is retail management and that's not really covered in an MBA (although you will learn some useful stuff for sure). An MBA would be more appropriate if you were either looking for a corporate job, or perhaps looking to expand your company and open up several franchises of your stores, and so on.

If you have any other thoughts and/or questions do not hesitate,
Best,
Jon

Hi Jon,

Thank you very much for your response. In my previous email, I talked about what I want to do after MBA study: social entrepreneurship and venture capital, and both topics make me become an indepedent entrepreuner or a staff in some corporates.I am pretty sure that I want to get a MBA degree in the US top university. What I am doing is to have some real business practice in the field of entrepreneurship.

More information about me:

I stayed in China until that I finished my high school.Because of my father`s job, I and My mom had to come to Chile.I majored in Economics with a minor in Business Administration for my undergraduate degree in the best university in Chile, and then got a Master degree in Economics in the same university.I worked in the Central bank and the best university in Chile as an economist, but I turned down to an offer for PhD. Economic in the US because I want to obtain a MBA degree in a top school in the US. Currently I am working in a big Pension fund company in Chile as a strategist. I appreciate very much for my experience as an entrepreneur. In fact, I have worked for my business as least one year, and now I want to dedicate myself more time for that. Moreover, I have helped other Chinese entrepreneurs start their businesses and settle them down in a new country. Do you think if this experience will help my application or quitting the job before my application will hurt my MBA pplciation? In the info I gave to you,Who could be the best recommedator except my boss in my current workplace?

Thank you very much for your orientation

Kindly, Song

My thoughts are that if you can possibly swing it, it is probably going to be your strongest position if you can keep your full time work until you are past the interview process. The reason is that when people quit their jobs too early in the process they somewhat give up some power. The school will then start thinking about a longer gap in full time employment between the start of program and graduation date. So keep this in mind. Your work experience is strong and you have some good experiences to talk about in applying.

Hey Song,
Well then you are right! :) An MBA is for you. You have to think carefully about how you can translate your experience until now into something that will be useful to your MBA, and just as importantly will be to connect your past experience in one way or another to your future goals.

Do that and you should be laying a solid basis for a good MBA application.

And thanks for some info about your story. I think there is much here that is unique and interesting, and much too that is applicable to your MBA application. You have to strategize to figure out exactly what your best stories are, but overall, it seems like you have plenty to pull from.
