ISB Hyderabad Blues: Indian School of Business MBA admissions

ISB is a dream destination for many Indian MBA applicants. But year after year, as ISB continues to make rapid strides and gain accolades across the world, the local competition gets more intense. Valentine's day (actually the day after, to be technically correct) saw a lot of broken hearts, as ISB Round 2 results were rolled out. Riaz was one of those hopefuls who wasn't in the list of lucky applicants. Here's how he views the entire episode... Read entire article »

Hello Sir,
I got a call all of a sudden from SP Jain GMBA(Dubai/Singapore). I had casually filled out its form 48 hours back. I seriously have not researched this school. I will have to take a flight and valuable time off from work for the interview on 5th March. Is the program worth it ?

I have applied to some good bschools in USA for R3 and awaiting response from them.

Hi Kumar,

Before answering that question, a couple of quick ones from my side.

What's the GMAT story? Are you planning to re-take it (770 target!). Also can you share a little more about your profile and what schools you've applied to in R3?

Kumar-bhai,

I like the super-confident response :-)

In your situation, I would skip the SP Jain offer, fix up the GMAT (it'll help you target higher ranked schools) and then take a shot at the Round 1 deadlines in the coming season.

That would give you a few more months to prove your mettle at the entrepreneurial intiative and build up a few more impressive success stories. You'll also have more time to research schools and not feel pressured to jump at offers that come out of the blue.

Don't let impatience get the better of you. Hang in there and go back into the akhaadaa with a stronger profile.

Hey Yaar, My SP jain interview was ok, but as it said I dont think the investment is worth,

In the meantime, I am planning a GMAT retake with 3 months of solid study Starting 1st april 2011.

I have already appeared gmat once 47/34-5.5, looking for a high 700 now and apply to ISB/Insead/Nanyang this year(2012-2013). studied only 37 days last time over for a decent splitted 650. Got calls from a couple colleges this year but not taking it up.

Profile by august 2012 : - Professional experience - 4 years
2 yr top IT- SAP-analyst.
2 yr entrepreneurship- till date.
1.5 year TEO(the earth organization south africa)-NGO-exec head operations- India.
Engineer from Univ of Pune, decent grades all over.
I am a good writer of essays/sop's. I reviewed the GRE sop's of a few friends and my personal goal essays are also surprisingly good as per feedback of most people who read them.

Also this year I had applied to all colleges(smith, cox, wsc, tamu) for OTM(operations and tech management). I dont think its intelligent for me to get back to IT after a long break of 2 years.

You mentioned ur specialty is only top schools info. So i thought I would consult u regarding this.
How is OTM at ISB/Insead ? employment opportunities ? I dont wanna come back to own business immediately after an MBA.

I am planning eveything in advance for next year. This year I went with a slack approach and screwd up eveything.
Cheers !!

Not 35, not 40...but a precise 37 days! So you were actually counting days? Just kidding.

Compared to the MBA applicant pool, MS programs attract candidates with considerably different profiles, aspirations and experience levels. So just be a little cautious on replicating the SOP approach for B-schools.

Happy to get into a call to answer your other questions about GMAT, post-MBA goals (operations, IT), employment options et al.
