Ask a Purdue (Krannert) Student

Post Mon Jul 26, 2010 5:20 pm
It's my pleasure to introduce Franklin Kuok (seokuok) as our latest student representative from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University! Franklin has generously volunteered to serve as our point person to field the community's questions about Purdue.

Please note that this isn't a discussion thread (or forum) for application advice. It's meant for talking about life inside the Krannert program.

A big thanks to Franklin! Ask your questions!

Hey Franklin,

Purdue is one of schools i am interested in for my mba, can you talk a bit about the admissions process, and scholarships, assistantships that type of thing?

Just overall provide some insight into the school and program. I work in financial operations now but would eventually like to get into supply chain management/ logistics.

Thanks,

Hey Franklin,
I'm targeting Krannert for MBA too. I have a few questions?

1. Are Assistantships very difficult to secure, typically what fraction of the students are offered assistantships? (I've heard that there are very few assistantships available in the US, especially since the recession)

2. How expensive/cheap is it to stay at West Lafayette?

3. How good are the placement services? I'm an Operations Engineer and I'm looking to work in SCM post MBA in the US.

4. I've heard that internships has pretty much dried up, and the few internships available are usually reserved US citizens. I've heard foreign residents have little, if not no scope of securing an internship during these tough times. Is there any truth in any of this?

Thanks in advance!

Vivek

Hey Vanilla Gorilla,

Krannert like most schools has a few rounds of applications and during each round, prospective students may be selected to interview at Purdue. Usually you'll interview with someone from admissions and sometimes a current MBA student may interview you also. If you interview on-site, usually you'll be invited to go to a few classes to see what it's like.

For those that get admitted, sometimes they are offered a graduate assistantship of some sort in the admission letter and the GA you end up getting is usually based on to some degree your work experience. A lot of students interview for their graduate assistantships during Krannert weekend, which is around late April and it's a weekend where admitted students get to go to classes, meet current MBA students, network, etc. It's a good time and very informative!

I can't provide you details about scholarships since I don't have a lot of experience in this area. However you might find some information about them on Krannert's website.

As for the program, it's very diverse with a whole range of experiences. Classes are around 30-40 students and the case method is generally used for teaching. Everyone is very friendly and you'll get to meet a lot of unique people! Krannert also has daily coffee hours in the morning so it's a great time to network with your classmates and professors.

Purdue University's campus is pretty awesome in my opinion. They have a wide variety of facilities for students, a lot of nearby restaurants and bars and Purdue Sporting events are a lot of fun to attend.

As you know, Purdue is very well known for its Supply Chain and Operations bit and so if that's what you're coming in for, you'll be very happy.

==================

Hey Vivek,

If I had to make a guess on assistantships... I'd guess maybe a third or fourth of the class has a GA, but you may want to ask admissions for a better number.

West Lafayette is pretty cheap for the most part. My rent for a single was $593 for 600+ square feet and I was less than a mile away. If you visit my website Krannert MBA, in one of the posts, I try to break down a Krannert student's expected expenses.

Placement at Krannert in my opinion is very good. Graduate Career Services does everything in its power to help you secure an internship. Obviously your success is contingent on your effort but GCS is very good in providing you the resources necessary to be competitive when trying to get an internship. For your focus in SCM, the placement is very good as we have some major employers who come recruit for SCM. In my first year, there were a lot of on-campus interviewers for SCM and Operations.

I don't agree with the sentiment that foreign residents have a harder time securing internships compared to US citizens. There were plenty of foreign residents in my class that secured internships with great companies. It's really just about how much effort you put in your search. The biggest factor I think is that students need to be patient and be willing to persevere through a lot of rejection since it can take awhile before you get an internship but if you are persistent, you'll be rewarded.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much for your useful advices and information, bro SEOKuok. I will apply for MBA course at Purdue - Krannert Fall 2011 semester and I have just had a bit information about Krannert culture. Would you please share with me and others more news related to core culture of Krannert? Which points should I focus on Krannert culture in my essay? I graduated from a technology university in Vietnam with majors in Mechanical engineering (1st degree) and Business Administration (2nd degree); my experience is three year, more than 2 years working as lecturer in Faculty of Mechanical engineering and more than 6 months working for Shipbuilding Science and Technology in Vietnam. How should I demonstrate I fit with Krannert as portential candidate like you? Thank you again, bro SEOKuok.

Hi Truong,

Krannert's motto is "Work hard, Work right, Work together" and this fits pretty well into the culture of Krannert. It's an environment that encourages teamwork and from my experience everyone is very helpful and friendly.

The student body is extremely diverse with a variety of backgrounds which adds a lot to the classroom discussions.

I can't really go into how to frame your essays but in general the prompts are pretty self-explanatory.

If you want more specifics, just let me know exactly what kind of information you're seeking and I'll try my best to help.

Hi everyone,

I know most of you are busy finishing up GMAT. Some of you may already have started with applying to your dream schools. Yet some of you may have already applied. A year back I was in your shoes. Time passed away quickly and I got into the MBA program! Trust me you all will get into one too.

So I am a first year MBA student at Krannert concentrating in Operations and Strategy. My background: engineering, 5 years work-ex in IT, GMAT 700. I'd be happy to answer all your questions. Smile

Good luck!

Vikram

Hi Vikram

We ve talked earlier. ! I completed my application today- on deadline day. I have been going through a few posts, where it seems Purdue doesnt invite for interviews?
Is that true. How long do I have to wait before I get any sort of decision from their end ?

Regards

mirantdon,

Purdue is looking to move to 100% interviews of all applicants being considered for admission. I'm not sure if they have set the goal for this year or next, but this last year we ended up having about a 75% interview rate. So chances are that you will have an interview this year.

As for when you receive an answer or a call back, I'd like to say soon, but I think that it'll probably be early December before you hear anything. That's just my opinion though. I'll go in and ask today what they think the time frame is and if they're willing to share, but if history repeats itself, you'll hear in December.

I wish you the best of luck on your application.

Gareth

Thanks a lot Gareth.!

I have completed my application and sent the application fee. However, my academic transcript are pending which I ll be sending via DHL or something in the coming week. Willthat have any adverse effect on my application.i.e, can that push my application into Round2?

Post Wed Nov 02, 2011 6:51 am
It shouldn't as they will be compiling all the applications for review over the next few weeks. They will just add the official transcript to the file when they receive it.

I did go in and speak to them this morning already and they said the official line is to not expect any response until the 15th of December, which is when we begin the first interview process. So it'll be a waiting game for the next 6 weeks, but then we will see some quick process as they go through everything.

Again, I wish you luck.
