Topic: AF Officer looking for a profile eval..thanks
PostMon Feb 05, 2007 7:42 am

Hello,

I need a little advice. Any helpful opinions are appreciated.

I am currently an Air Force Officer with approximately 6 years of experience and plan on transitioning to the civilian world in the next 15 months. I aspire to attend a top MBA program (Darden, Duke, Cornell, and North Western if gmat is high enough), but I have a low undergraduate GPA from a good business undergrad program. (Miami of Ohio..solid school but not top) My freshman year, lack of maturity, coupled with no time management skills cost me dearly and I ended up with an overall 2.64 GPA by the time I graduated. I showed significant improvement from my sophomore to senior years, but the damage was already done. (My GPA for the major/minor were 3.4/3.1 if they look at that) Ok…long story short…here is my current standing

-Haven't taken GMAT yet…doing my best to prep, and my goal is 700. If i dont hit 700, what would be the least acceptable score to compensate for my low GPA?

- 6 yrs work experience in AF, have been responsible for millions of dollars in assets, have had 3 to 40 subordinates depending on job and year, been deployed to the middle east, South Korea, Europe etc…, been consistently ranked in the top 10% of officers in units

- I also have a masters degree (general management and leadership) from a university that focuses on adult education (Webster), graduated w/ 4.0 GPA...I know it doesn't have a name but I did significantly better in the graduate program which I am hoping makes up for my undergrad GPA

My Question is…is there any remote chance I am competitive for acceptance. I am hoping my masters GPA will make up for the undergrad, or am I wasting my time? Any opinions would be appreciated.

There is certainly a chance, though you are right that the GPA poses a challenge. The fact that your GPA improved will help. The Masters will help as well. I cannot really give you a cut off GMAT but obviously the higher the better. I have been surprised at people with low GPA and GMAT doing well - you will have to leverage strong work and extracurricular experiences. Good luck!
