    (B) Even though children's life expectancy, which improved over the Colonial period's 50 percent mortality rate,
    (C) Although life expectancy for children improved after the Colonial period, during which the mortality rate was 50 percent,
    (D) While there was an improvement in life expectancy for children after the 50 percent mortality rate of the Colonial period, still
    (E) Despite children's life expectancy improvement from the Colonial period's 50 percent mortality rate,


    i cant see the parallel structure?? please elaborate...

    the splits are either between improved or improvement

    improved is parallel with died

    so left with A, B, and C.

    B makes the parts in between the commas non-essential
    A introduces two clauses
    C by process of elimination

    IMO C

    It is showing the correct contrast using although.. also, Colonial period's 50% mortality rate doesn't seem apt.. C correctly puts it as Colonial period, "during" which the mortality rate was 50%..

    I'll vote for C.

    A. - 1. Colonial period's 50 percent mortality rate is wrong. 50 percent mortality rate does not belong to Colonial period, rather the Colonial period is characterized by this phenomenon. The use of possessive case is not apt here.

    2. After the Colonial period's 50 percent mortality rate, life expectancy improved.. - This seems to illogically suggest that life expectancy improved after mortality rate.

    B. - 1. Same mistake as in A.1

    2. Even though children's life expectancy, <modifier>, as late as the nineteenth century about one child in three died before reaching the age of six. - The dependent clause lacks a verb.

    C. Although life expectancy for children improved after the Colonial period, <modifier modifying colonial period>, as late as the nineteenth century about one child in three died before reaching the age of six - Correct

    D. 1. life expectancy for children - Unidiomatic. Correct - Life expectancy of children.

    2. While there was an improvement in life expectancy for children after the 50 percent mortality rate of the Colonial period - Illogically states that there was an improvement after mortality rate.

    E. 1. Same error as in A.1

    2. children's life expectancy improvement - Badly written, awkward. Better - improvement in life expectancy of children.

    Eliminate A, B and E. "Colonial period's 50 percent mortality rate" is one of the worst constructions.
    D is not clear as to whether WHILE shows simultaneity or contrast.

    The essence of the original sentence is in the contrast between the conditions of children during and after colonial period.
