330. Having the right hand and arm being crippled by a sniper’s bullet during the First World War, Horace Pippin, a Black American painter, worked by holding the brush in his right hand and guiding its movements with his left.

(A) Having the right hand and arm being crippled by a sniper’s bullet during the First World War
(B) In spite of his right hand and arm being crippled by a sniper’s bullet during the First World War
(C) Because there had been a sniper’s bullet during the First World War that crippled his right hand and arm
(D) The right hand and arm being crippled by a sniper’s bullet during the First World War
(E) His right hand and arm crippled by a sniper’s bullet during the First World war

can you please explain the answer?

C, D and E: Pls ignore.
The tone of the sentence needs the contrast. In the sense that something bad had happened but nevertheless, he is working hard. You getting my point.

Thus, my pic is B. But lets see what others have to say about A.
What is OA?

I am tied between A and B as well. I like B because of "his" rather than "the" referring to arm and hand.

I also had B in mind.

But OA seems to be E! I am confused.

It's not B because the rest of the sentence is not referring to his crippled hand as something that he overcame. For "in spite" to work, he would have to still use his crippled hand to paint without guiding it with his left. The sentence is simply saying that he has a bum hand so he uses his other hand to guide it. The only reason I know this is because I saw this one in my prep class. I also thought it was B originally. At least this second time seeing the question I didn't make the same mistake.
