As an experienced labor organizer and the former head of one of the nation’s most powerful labor unions, Grayson is an excellent choice to chair the new council on business-labor relations.
Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the conclusion above?
(A) The new council must have the support of the nation’s labor leaders if it is to succeed.
(B) During his years as a labor leader, Grayson established a record of good relations with business leaders.
(C) The chair of the new council must be a person who can communicate directly with the leaders of the nation’s largest labor unions.
(D) Most of the other members of the new council will be representatives of business management interests.
(E) An understanding of the needs and problems of labor is the only qualification necessary for the job of chairing the new council.

Please provide explanation.

I think the answer should be B.

A) Out of context. No where it's mentioned about requiring support from other labor leaders.
B) Being a experience Labor Organize and former head of one of the nation's powerful Labor unions, he must be a good communicator with labors. As the new council is for business-labor relationships, the missing link here for grayson is good with business as well. So, option B, states that he is good with business as well.
c) It's inference from the passage. It's not stranthen the argument
d) out of context.
e) it keep talking about labor part of the passage only.

I am going with C. C actually offers a prerequisite for the conclusion to be valid. What is the OA?

IMO:E

Premise:As X and Y, grayson is an excellent choice to chair the new council.

E: X and Y are the only requirements to chair the new council. Thus E strengthens the conclusion.

Beware:B is a trap!!

thanks.

A) The new council must have the support of the nation’s labor leaders if it is to succeed.

We are talking about a business labor council. G is already an experienced labor leader. What about the business side of the council??

(B) During his years as a labor leader, Grayson established a record of good relations with business leaders.

Stimulus established G's credentials as labor leader. This choice says he has excellent relation wih business leaders. Good chance to be the answer

(C) The chair of the new council must be a person who can communicate directly with the leaders of the nation’s largest labor unions

Misses the business side of the council
.
(D) Most of the other members of the new council will be representatives of business management interests.

Says G has to lead most people who represent Businesses. We can't say for sure that G will be an excellent person

(E) An understanding of the needs and problems of labor is the only qualification necessary for the job of chairing the new council.

To me only was pretty strong and in a day to day world chairs of a council are not one sided.

Strengthen Questions can add extra evidence/premises or establish assumptions that are necessary. My pick is B. What is the OA?
The premises say about G's credential in the job of labor organizer and head of labor.
However, the conclusion refers to the job in council on business relations.
It seems leave a gap between premises and conclusion

only B is suitable to fill the gap. [/img]
If official answer is E, it is questionable ..

Grayson is an excellent choice to chair the new council on business-labor relations

Many can posses the requirement mentioned in E. so why is Grayson an excellent choice..
Answer is either B or C. C uses the word "must", which really makes it an excellent candidate for answer Smile

IMO E.

If he was an experienced labour organizer and head of mationals most powerful labour union and if his job requirement just demands nothing else but what he was experienced at before, then he would be a excellent choice.

@ those who chose B : what if Grayson was exceptionally good at maintaining relations with business leaders but failed to maintain good relationships with the labour union. The later part is just left hangning in option B

IMO B comes pretty close but E would win

Regards,
Vignesh
